Who Is José Luis Serrano?
As a young artist, he worked with materials that were available for his low budget, such as drawings on paper dyed with coffee. When his comercial success detonated, supported by the compliments that the artist Francisco Toledo made, he collaborated with many of the city´s most important galleries like Galería Miranda and Galería Juan Martín, where he exhibited his work regularly. Serrano also had international requests to exhibit his artworks. His recognition was such, that in 1978, with 31 years of age, he had a solo exhibition in the Modern Arts Museum (MAM) in Mexico City. The 80s were a decade of fame and production for Serrano, he produced at least two artworks per week and even though it was a prolific era, artistically and economically, he ended up being completely exhausted. Serrano made the decision to move to Cuernavaca, Morelos in 1991, to work in silence and leave behind the chaos of the city´s art market scene that wore him out.
His Work
Nowadays, José Luis Serrano focuses on the creation and experimentation of new techniques, influenced by Paul Klee, Miró and Kandinsky´s abstractions. His technique has enabled him to produce artworks with simple abstract images that overlap in subtle reliefs, forming various pictorial planes. According to José Luis Serrano, painting should be an adventure, which is why he is always searching for new ways to create ingenious and original artworks.
“In each canvas you have to enter the adventure, you get in touch with the universe, with God, or whatever you want to call it. Because it is an exercise of meditation, reflection and self-construction.”
